What is FSSAI Registration?
If you are thinking to start a new food business then you have to know about the FSSAI Registration or Food License. FSSAI meaning refers to “Food Safety and Standard Authority of India”. From the 2006 all the food-related acts come under the FSSAI. The FSSAI Department make sure i.e all the food-related business must follow the guidelines and regulations under the FSSAI Act 2006. FSSAI is responsible for setting the standard and rules & regulations & directly report to health & family welfare, government of India.
FSSAI registration is an abbreviation used for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI license is mandatory before starting any food business. All the manufacturers, traders, restaurants who are involved in food business must obtain a 14-digit registration or a license number which must be printed on food packages.
Why register for FSSAI License?
It has been made compulsory by FSSAI department for all the food business operators in India to obtain a FSSAI license to conduct their business in India. All the food business operators must obtain a 14 digit FSSAI License number and print it on the food packages. To reduce the adulteration in the food and substandard products, FSSAI has made it compulsory to obtain this license.
FSSAI checks for food licence of food business operators on random basis and takes strict actions against those businesses whose licences have expired or businesses who don’t have FSSAI license.
There is a high degree of consumer confidence in safety and quality of food. It helps to promote innovation in foods products. It helps in removal of multiple regulations. It facilitates trade without compromising consumer safety and a larger share.
Who needs FSSAI License?
Any business or individual who handles or operates the food between farm to plate needs to obtain food licence i.e. manufacturing, packaging, sale, importing, exporting and storage of the food.
- Dairy and Dairy processing
- Food manufacturer who manufactures and sells the food products like biscuits and ready to eat products
- Processor like pickle, dry fruit maker will fall under this category
- Retailer is any shop or establishment who has a retail outlet in India, same goes for wholesaler and distributor
- Even a transporter transporting the food needs to get a food licence
- Storages and warehouses who also needs food safety registration
Guidelines on FSSAI License Number
- The FSSAI logo and FSSAI license number shall be displayed on the label of the food package in contrast colour to the background.
- In case of multiple units (manufacturer/ packer/ relabeller/ marketer) the FSSAI logo and license number of the brand owner shall be displayed on the label of the food package. The addresses of the multiple units on the label should carry the FSSAI license number.
- In case of imported food products, the importer shall display FSSAI logo and FSSAI license number along with the name and address of importer. These may either be pre-printed on the label or affixed through a sticker before customs clearance.
- The height of letters and numeral of license number shall be as prescribed in 2.3.3 of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulation, 2011.
- The Regulation 2.6.1 of Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, 2011 shall be applicable to display of FSSAI License number and logo.
- The display of FSSAI logo on the label of the food product is not a mark of certification but it signifies that the FBO holds a valid license under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
